Movie Review : Delhi 6

When it so happens that all the characters in a plot are helping towards only the narration and not working in favour of the story, it can be made into a nice novel but not necessarily into a spectacular movie. A movie needs a good storyline with interesting characters. Delhi-6 lacks in that department.

Well,i am not saying its a bad movie, its far from being bad. But it drags monotonously in its narrative. Not all the scenes synchronize properly and tight editing also misses unlike Mehra’s RDB.

The story of the movie is very short. In order to fulfill his sick grandmother’s wish, American resident Roshan (Abhishek Bachchan), comes back to his ancestral place Delhi where he discovers some relationships, person and a society that contrasts his living in New York. And quite predictably he falls for the change. The last 20 mins of the film really puts you well in your seat with its unpredictability and sharp directing skills.

On the technical department, Delhi-6 has really nice cinematography by Vinod Pradhan. Even the stunts by Allan Amin are quite good. Wish AB junior had taken some of these action tips for the disastrous Drona.

The movie lacks a tight script and as said before, proper editing. The production value is quite high though. Direction is very sharp and perfect. Any other director would have easily messed up with the faulted script. Music by A.R.Rahman is top notch. The song ‘arziyaan’ tears your heart. Even the song “yeh delhi” touches a chord.

Performances are very good. Om puri, Waheeda Rehman, Supriya Pathak, Pawan Malhotra, Atul kulkarni and Divya dutta pours in their heart and soul into each of their respective roles. Sonam kapoor shows sparks and has a infectious screen presence but the script hardly gives her a chance.

The movie rightly belongs to Abhishek. He puts in a strong performance but he should begin checking his mannerisms. He has done a commendable job. The pleasant extended cameo from Rishi Kapoor and a special cameo by Amithabh Bachchan are quite good.

On the whole Delhi-6 doesnt disappoint you neither does it makes its position somewhere high in your eyes. Give it a watch. My rating is 2/5.

Movie Preview : Delhi-6

Here is one of the most anticipated film of the year. Delhi-6 marks the third directorial venture of Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra after the hugely successful Rang De Basanti. It has a very interesting premise of characters and storyline. And from the promos that are on air, my hopes and expectation for this film are quite high.

With a plot rotating around the old walled city of Delhi, Chandni Chowk and the relation of a person, who was brought up abroad, with his city,  it is certainly a movie we are all waiting to watch.

The film is quite strong when it comes to star power also just like Mehra’s Aks and RDB.

After quite a few ups and downs Abhishek Bachchan seems to have caught upon a role that is worth his calibre. He was completely wasted in his past few films like Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and Sarkar Raaj.

With the perfect indian beauty to her credit, and with a debut not so perfect there is Sonam Kapoor for you. Well, although Sawariyaan didnt do well, she was quite good in the film and showed tremendous potential. From the promos of Delhi-6, we see she looks a million bucks and makes herself interesting.

There are also a number of character artists who form an intergral part of hindi film industry.

Waheeda Rehman, the breathtaking beauty and a tremendous actress of yester year ( well she is still a beautiful and great actress) could be seen as junior b’s dadi. There is the supremely talented Supriya Pathak, Divya Dutta and Tanvi Azmi.

And there is Rishi Kapoor, Om Puri and Atul Kulkarni. They dont need any superlatives i guess.

And the thing we have already come across Delhi-6 is its magnificent music. A.R.Rahman is on a high. With a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and 3 Oscar nomination (which we pray he wins), this man once again proves why he is the best. The songs mesmerise you, not because they are just magnificent but because there are so many  variety and each song touches you. My favourite is ‘Masakkali’ by Mohit Chauhan. ‘Arziyaan’ by Kailash Kher and Javed Ali and the pure classical ( or a pure magic?) ‘Bhor Bhaye’ by Ustaad Bade Ghulam Ali and Shreya Ghoshal. Not to forget the powerful lyrics by Prasoon Joshi.

The running time of the film is approximately 2 hrs and 20 mins, which makes us predict that the editing must be sharp like Rang De Basanti (although RDB was lengthier).

And from a producer who is keen in making good films, Ronnie Screwvala , Delhi-6 is all set to hopefully mesmerize you.

Dont miss it. Give it a watch  before you hear the reviews from our great critics.
